Visionary's State Fair Week: A Blue-Ribbon Kind of Week

With the Iowa State Fair now in full swing, Visionary kicked things off early with our own State Fair Week in the office. Lots of us love making the trip to the fairgrounds each year, so we brought a taste of that fair spirit to work before diving into the real thing: butter, pie, corn dogs, bingo, and all.

A huge thanks to the Visionary Social Sponsorship Committee for planning and putting on this year's State Fair Week!

Did You Know?

The butter cow tradition dates all the way back to 1911, when sculptor J.K. Daniels carved the very first one. Each life-size butter cow is sculpted from about 600 pounds of butter, enough to butter nearly 19,000 slices of toast.
The very first Iowa State Fair ran in 1854 on a budget of just $323, drawing an estimated 7,000-10,000 people. The fair now welcomes more than a million visitors over its 10-day run each August, including a single-day record of over 128,000 people in 2024.

Butter Cow Carving Showdown & Bring Your Own Pie

Inspired by the fair's most iconic attraction, teams got hands-on and creative carving their own butter cows, clean, fun, and just a little competitive! We kept things sweet with a Bring Your Own Pie table, where everyone shared their favorite homemade or store-bought treats.

East Side Fair Fashion, State Fair Lunch, & Mystery Activity

In the spirit of Des Moines' East Side, everyone broke out their best custom graphic tees, vintage gear, and spirit wear for a fun (not-a-competition) fashion showcase. We brought the fairgrounds to the break room with corn dogs, golden fried cheese curds, and ice cold lemonade, no lines required! The day wrapped up with a mystery paper activity for a shot at more fair tickets.

Thanks for bringing the fair spirit, Visionary!

From butter cows to bingo cards, this week was proof that a little fair spirit goes a long way. Now go enjoy the real thing while it's here. Who's headed to the fairgrounds this year?
