Get to Know: Software Engineer Chris Weber

For many, the path to becoming a programming whiz doesn’t typically include a stint as a former high school math teacher. Then again, Chris Weber is anything but your typical programmer.

No, not 6-foot-10, retired NBA All-Star Chris Webber. Visionary’s newest software engineer isn’t quite that tall — though his is a certified college basketball referee.

Meet Chris, one of the newest visionaries in our office, who enjoys caffeine, a good sci-fi read, and spending time with his family:

Start of by telling everyone a little about yourself:

My family has lived in the Des Moines area for about 15 years. My wife, Erin, works a couple of part-time jobs in Indianola. Our daughter is currently a college junior and will graduate in four years. She’s also planning on grad school upon graduation.

What is your web background?

I have worked the past 6-plus years as a developer at a Des Moines-area web company and worked 9 years before that in the insurance/financial field as a programmer.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I officiate 3 sports (soccer, basketball, softball) up to the college level. My wife and I enjoy outdoor activities and also watching our daughter's sporting events. When we have a free evening at the same time, we enjoy trying new restaurants.

Where is your favorite place to eat in Des Moines?

Riccelli's, when we're in the mood for Italian. Otherwise, anything not seafood.

Best book or blog you've read lately?

I have very little time to read, but I do enjoy sci-fi books.

What is one thing you could not live a day without?

Caffeine.

What are you loving at the moment?

I like many different music genres. What I listen to changes and rotates every few months. I’m actually listening too, and appreciating, country music for the first time ever.

Anything else we should know?

I’m a former math teacher and high school coach. UNI graduate. ISU fan.
